Department of Nephrology & Renal Transplantation was started in 1987. This is one of the largest centres in public sector Institutes of the country, which takes care of all kidney related ailments. The WEEK magazine in its cover story and survey rated the nephrology services of SGPGIMS amongst the top three best multi speciality hospitals in India consecutively for the 3 years. The Department also houses the editorial office for Indian Journal of Transplantation and Clinical Queries in Nephrology and was the secretariat for Indian Society of Nephrology and Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India in the past. The department offers tertiary care services for management of chronic kidney disease including renal replacement therapy hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplantation for the wholes state of UP and surrounding states like Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Bihar and other north eastern state and Nepal including critical care nephrology services with 24X7 ventilator equipped bed and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT).


The Academic program includes a DM training program which stated in 1990 with 6 DM students are registered annually. It also offers a Post Doctoral Certificate Course (Renal Transplantation) for Post DM students; is approved for observer ship & fellowship in Peritoneal Dialysis, Clinical Nephrology & Transplantation in collaboration with International society of Nephrology & International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis; is the IGOU Centre for Nurses/Technicians training in dialysis (PNCC); and offers a PhD program in the field of nephrology, dialysis and transplantation.


The department has 79 inpatient beds, 13 beds in kidney transplants units, 30 hemodialysis stations and six bedded critical care Nephrology, all with 100% bed occupancy. The Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is provided to patients who are hemodynamically unstable. The Hemodialysis Unit at SGPGIMS has 40 Hemodialysis Machines that run round the clock (24x7) in three shifts where about 2000dialysis / month are done. Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) was established at SGPGI since 1993 is the largest scale in South East Asia. The Department has a 6 bedded Critical Care Nephrology unit. The department provides all intervention related services like permacath insertion, Tenckhoff catheter insertion, USG guided kidney biopsy, AV shunt and AV fistula. The Intervention Nephrology suit is equipped with a C-ARM, Image guided and ultrasound guided vascular access management system. The kidney transplantation facility at SGPGIMS started with cadaver transplantation (donor being brain death) in 1987 and has been doing on an average 120 kidney transplants per year. From the initiation of department till date a total of 2325 renal transplants have been done at SGPGI. The Renal Lab (Nephrology) and Transplant Immunology Lab has facilities for renal biochemistry; hematology; PTH and Vit D assay, HLA testing and offers 28 biochemistry, 8 hematology, 4 drug assay, two hormonal assay and 13 transplant immunology tests.


Research is given special emphasis and DM students are encouraged also to do bench research under the guidance of the faculty. An infrastructure development, intramural and extramural research grant money amount of Rs. 45,60,300/-, and Rs.83,90,200/- respectively has been received. The academic output of the faculty and students is evidenced by 228 original articles at the national and international level, 20 reviews and editorials, 26 case reports and 17 book chapters in the past 25 years. The current faculty includes Prof. RK Sharma, Head, Prof. Amit Gupta, Dr. Narayan Prasad, Dr. Anita Saxena, Dr. Anupama Kaul and Dr. Dharmendra Singh Bhadauria
